Hard Lesson Learned

My little poult killed her first turkey this year and it was a jake.  We were riding around this morning and were stopping at our last spot to listen.  Brother was in the truck playing games on my phone since the boss hen had to go into work today.  She and I were standing 20 yards off the road listening for gobbles when we sat down by an oak tree quietly talking.  All of a sudden I look to my right and see turkeys milling there way towards us.  Here were are within eyesight of the truck and 4 jakes come silently feeding towards us.  She had left her gun in the truck and we had to sit and watch as one jake came to within 20 yards and stretched his neck out.  All I could hear her saying under her breath over and over was "Daddy I am just sick."  We let them feed off and we crawled back to the truck.  She was bummed and I tried to console her with the fact that she had already taken a jake this year and with the season so close to an end those birds may well live to maturity.  I think what really stuck in her was the fact that 10 minutes prior to seeing the birds I had asked is she wanted to go get her gun and just set up and call, but she said no.  It was definitely a hard lesson for her to learn, but I told her that we got to share the experience together and they got to live.

When she shoots her first tom, all will be washed away. Little moments teach us the most.

That's tough. But as said, when she drops the hammer it'll all be a distant memory!

My little girl has no, none, zip desire to kill one. I've taken her 3 times this year and all 3 where exciting hunts to say the least. She just enjoys watching them! Ah, memories anyway

I've always said that experience is the best teacher, hope she gets a chance at a big longbeard this year.

This will be a story she tells with a smile some day.

She will always remember killing her first bird. She has a lot of years ahead of her to get that first long beard.

I learned the hard way never, never, never, never leave your gun anywhere out of finger reach when you're turkey hunting.  Those tough lessons are the one's I remember the best.  Tell your girl she's not the only hunter that got burned by not having her or his gun at hand.
