I ended up bushwhacking a jake yesterday afternoon.  Saw a group of four with one tom as far as I could tell.  I got in position laying on my belly just below the top of a hill and saw a red head moving from right to left.  As tough as it's been for me out here, that red head at 20 yards was all I needed to see to pull the trigger.  In all honesty, I may have knowingly shot a jake.  It's an 11 hour drive back home.  I elected to sleep in this morning.  I think I'm done hunting these plains birds.  I had a couple toms on the edge of a cut corn field 600 yards away.  All I did was try to drop down and head them off to the ravine the appeared to be dropping down into.  I moved 100 yards down the hill, glassed them again, and they were moving quickly away from me.

High plains drifter

I've been in the Deep South, that's thick woods!! I've never hunted there, and would not no how.Probably hard to get permission. The plains is different country, and it takes time to get good at it.
