8 Year Old Tagged Out & Friends First Bird

Well my 8 year old son tagged out Saturday morning with a nice 2 year old with a 9 3/4" beard and 1" spurs.  We went to a friends house because he had never killed a bird.  Our plan was to call him one in and my son would be the secondary shooter.  Well bird gobbled on the roost 3 times.  When he hit the ground he shut up.  We stayed out for 30 min and then decided to move locations.  On the way out I checked a creek bottom and sure enough the bird had made his way there.  We set up so my friend could get the best shot.  Well bird hung up about 75 yards so I switched to a mouth call.  He came in on a string!  Got to 30 yards and saw something he did not like and started to leave.  My friend could not see him at this point so I told my son to kill him.  I did not even get those words out and he let a load of #7 HW fly smacking him in the head!  Sad to say it was his last Fed #7 HW!!   Anyway I felt so bad my son shot that turkey in front of my buddy but it was either now or never.  My buddy was super happy for my son.

So we moved to another area and hit the call and two birds gobble wayyyy off.  We cut the distance down and set up in the edge of a wheat field.  now the birds where 300 yards or so and 3 gobblers.  I called and one split off and started to circle around us.  I could tell this bird was hot!  I called a few more times and he gobbled 50 yards over the hill coming around behind us.  I told my buddy to spin around and I could here the bird walking in the leaves.  He stopped at 40 yards and he smacked him with a load of Double x #4's.  Man do those things hit hard.   2 year old, 9 7/8" beard and 1" spurs.

We had the best hunt I have had in a long time!!

Awesome story.  Great to see your son getting into it at a young age--I wish I had been hunting turkeys when I was 8!  Congrats to the lot of you for a good experience in the woods.

Thanks for all the kind replys!  I'm truly a blessed man to be able to go out and enjoy God's creation with my son and my friends. We have had the best season so far. Going to try it again in the morning by myself and Saturday morning with my buddy. Best of luck to you guys!
