Discovered a crack in our of my favorite  slate pots.  Still sounds good just hope it holds together.

That's a bummer when something happens to one of your favorites. I had to send my favorite back to the callmaker once after the sound went dead. Never have had that happen before, but he fixed it and it's worked great ever since and that was probably 6 years ago. I'd send it back after season and have him replace the slate he might even fix it for free like the callmaker did for me.

my understanding is if the crack is above the sound board, it will be fine.  if the crack is below the soundboard on the same side where the sound holes are, it may eventually become an issue if sound can escape.  I am not a callmaker, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. thanks.

sound escaping thru a crack is not a whole lot compared to the sound holes next to it.  But, If were one I made, I would take the call apart and repair it with CA glue.  It's got a 4000lb shear holding force, so once its been allowed to saturate the cracked area, and filled with it, it would be a permanent fix, and I doubt it would do it again.  I know a lot of call makers, who make repairs on calls during there production when they encounter some small crack or something.  It's not uncommon.  If done right, it's stronger than the wood, and in a lot of cases, you can't even tell there was a crack there, even from viewing it from the outside.

Well, if I have taught an old dog a new trick, then I feel honored!

noisy box call that seems to sound like a flock of juvenile hens pecking their way through a wheat field
