Odd find in the woods
May 29, 2016, 08:20:55 AM
I hunted northern Pa. public ground yesterday, on my way out of the woods I found a buried box about 3' by 1.5'
somebody had dug about 3" of dirt away from the top all around it, like they may have been careful not to get dirt in it. the lid was left off and it was empty.
this was in a big section of woods with no roads or foot trails near it, I had taken a compass reading and was cutting thru this section to where I had parked and just stumbled on it. There is nothing there to draw your eye to this spot and I didn't see any sign of an old homestead
it looked like it had been in the ground awhile but didn't look to be super old.
I spend a good bit of time in the woods and this was a new one for me, just thought it was odd

That is odd. How about sharing a photo or two with us?

the memory on my phone is full from the darn thing going off and taking pics of the inside of my pants

A box that size sounds to me as if someone was burying it to collect rain water for game animals. I could be wrong by I've got a buddy here that does the same thing. It keeps the deer around his place longer instead of having to leave and search for water. Says his end up staying kind of full all the time.

It was one of those treasure hunting games, Geocaching, it's a outdoor treasure hunting games, which use a global positioning system ( GPS ) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers ( called "geocaches" or caches" ) People leave small items or notes and if you take something from the box your suppose to put something back in place of the item you took for the next person.

You may be right Greg but I've not seen any of those boxes being 3 feet long. The dimensions didn't make sense to me but anything is possible.

one of my buddies thought of the geo gps idea yesterday, it was empty so if that is what it is whoever was the last person there took everything and left the lid off
without a shovel it would be a project to dig this open
it was not a spot that had the look of regular use, I had not been over that piece of ground before and it would take some looking to find it again
you could fit Jimmy Hoffa's leg in it, I didn't look around for more boxes for the rest of him
I got up at 1am to drive there and get back in to where I wanted to be before fly down,
on the way out I was hot, tired and thirsty

My friends that do the geo caching thing use plastic, waterproof storage containers for their goodies to protect and keep them dry. Interesting find u made sorry someone got there first.
If I can't make it through tomorrow, better make it through today.

I was going to say years ago that was a method of moving moonshine where I grew up in East Tennessee. There was always a buried or otherwise hidden box and money was left by the buyer and then the jars were left by the maker. I'd be pretty leary if I found anything like that around.
