I'm taking off May 13-16th and am planning to chase birds in KS. I live in MO. My deer lease is 20 miles from the KS/MO border. My family grew up farming near Salina, and I still have distant cousins but haven't been back in 20 yrs. This will be a solo trip, first time chasing non eastern birds, and I plan to camp or sleep in the truck. I've done a bunch of research, and think I have a general area picked out. My question for any one with experience is if you had the same 4 days off, which part of the state would you recommend. Not looking for spots just a general direction to head. Doesn't matter rio, merriam's, just want my best chance to fill a tag in 4 days.
So far I'm thinking north east?
Feel free to pm me.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I can only comment on the northern part of the state.  Northeast (Washington county and east) will more likely run you into Easterns.  Northcentral and northwest (Jewell country and west) will more likely run you into Rios.  The strip in the middle can give you hybrids.  Kansas has a LOT of walk-in areas...and as with any state, some spots are great, and some suck.  They're not always consistent, though.  Those are good dates to go, because you probably won't run into anybody else, but the wheat can be tall by then.

I hunted similar dates last year not far from where you mentioned.   We had problems with the weather but the turkeys cooperated.   I think the dates will be fine.  The weather is always a gamble.

Meant to say northwest. Somewhere around Stockton. Thanks for the replies. Anybody going to be in northwest KS around the same dates and wants to share info message me. I'm just as tickled to see or help someone get a bird as I am to pull the trigger.

I've hunted the area around Atwood to Norton a bunch of years.

Some years earlier than your dates, some later. Some good WIHA spots around Atwood.  If you don't have any luck, stop in town at the bars and chat to  some folks and they will help you out.  We've had 3 years where local folks have got us dialed in.

I'd make friends with your cousin's and head back to Salina. I hunted thete a few years back and always had good luck. We did hunt the first weekend of May though.

You may be able to get a quick idea on the "lay of the land" by looking on Google maps. Should be able to find a food source anyway
