Avatar?

How do I go about downloading a personal picture for my avatar?  Is there a certain size or pixel limit to an avatar?

I had better luck on my PC than my phone if that helps.

Do I download the picture straight from my computer, or do I have to go through photobucket? 

I keep getting an error reply trying to download straight off my PC, and I am guessing that the picture is too large.  I keep cutting the size, and still keep getting an error...

I go straight through my computer.

Some sites/forums are picky on the allowable size of a avatar..I tend to find what I want an resize it in photobucket.
