Benelli Nova, 28" bbl.  Just inherited it, brand new, never fired.  I'd like to set it up as a back up turkey gun.  Was thinking of either the Jellyhead or SSX.  Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated.  Will be shooting Hevi 7's.  Thanks.

I shoot Hevi-13's out of my nova/jellyhead combo and I love it. With this combo i'm good to 60 yards. Good luck this spring.

Throw a jelly head in and you're good to go.

I've had a Nova since shortly after they were introduced. Over the years I've tried all kinds of choke with different internal geometry and different exit diameters, with, as far as I can tell, most if not all of the various turkey loads that have been introduced over those years. I actually retired that gun for several years before finding exactly what worked best with it.

I think your choice of shotshells is excellent. I only shoot the 3" shells for hunting and the 3.5" when I'm evaluating a new choke tube.

My gun does best with the SSX and the Hevi-13 turkey chokes. Either makes a great choice.

Thanks,
Clark

I know I won't buy another JH. I have had 2 and they both swelled. Primos replaced it the first round, but wouldn't do anything for the 2nd one. I never shot anything larger then HTL #6's through them.
The addiction will cost you time and money and alienate those close to you. I can give you the names of a dozen addicts — myself included — whose wives begin to get their hackles up a week before turkey season starts and stay mad until a week after it closes.

I have the exact same gun as you and i'm shooting the Winchester Longbeard #6 3.5" with a Redhead Blackout .665 with great numbers.
Why shoot a 3.5"? Because they don't make a 4".

My father shoots the same gun and gets his best patterns with an SSX choke and 3.5" Hevi #6's. That combo throws patterns that are absolutely smokin !!  :icon_thumright:

Figured I'd give an update... picked up a used JH to try in this gun.  Paid a whopping 25 bucks for it.  I own a JH for my Win 1300 and have gotten great numbers although my go to is my PG with the Win.

Anyway, shot the Nova with the JH and Hevi 13, 3 inch 7's and got a 262 in 10 inches at a taped 40 yards.  I'm very happy with the results.  I just have the standard beads.  I have a total of 25 bucks on a choke tube invested on this gun.  Perfect for the back-up role!

 I shot a 290 out of my 28 inch nova with hevi13#7  3.5 inch and a Jellyhead .655

Shot a 177 with the  same setup and Winchester extended 3.5 #6
