I was wondering if the wood types are what dictates the sound of a box call or is it the design, or a combination of the two. I want a box call that has a medium front end that breaks over into a throaty yalk rasp. What wood combination would be good for that type yelp. I know its hard to explain but any opinions would be great. I do want to stay away from purple heart and mahogany because i have several box calls with those woods. Thanks

Not really sure I understand what your asking as the sound your looking for could be the product of the type of box more than the wood combo. For me the sound your looking for comes from a Turpin style box and as far as the wood combo's I like chestnut, teak or maybe sycamore for the box and ebony or black wood for the lid.

I was thinking the same thing x2

I think the sound you are looking for would come from a Black Walnut over Eastern Red Cedar double side box call. IMHO.

Sounds like you would want a paddle made from something with open straight grain and a box with a lot of vibrato in it. Something like Paduak for the paddle and butternut or teak for the box.

It's more in the tuning than the wood combo.

strutnrut

I agree with AL it's in the tuning of the box. In a Turpin I would go with a Teak and Macassar Ebony Lid but I like that combo any way.

Strutnrut makes the call you are looking for, trust me, get one of his hen boxes. They are nasty on the end.
