I have been working on a Joe Slaton trumpet for the past few weeks.  Here are two clips of me trying to yelp.  Please give me your honest feed back as to what you think.  Also, from what you hear, is there a chance that with some more practice old tom turkey come to this call?  I am trying to get it down and I really want to thank Joe for his help.

Keep in mind I'm no expert on a trumpet by any means.   But it sounds like to much pressure to me and to short of bursts of air.  More of a popping sound instead of a pulling sound.  Reduce the pressure if you can, it takes very little air.  Then try to draw out the yelps ans separate them a little more.  Like pulling water up a straw slowly, then letting it drop back down.

Sounds like your on the right track.

No expert here either as I'm just 6-8 months into my trumpet training.
Try to slow your cadence down a bit, I do this by taking a big breath of air and releasing then I will start drawing air thru the mouthpiece. This, along with controlling the back pressure helps me get those nice soft yelps. With a trumpet air flow the old saying "Less is more" rings true
Definitely a hard call to master but it sounds like you've got a good start.

When I listen to it, I think it is fast also.  I like your tip guesswho about drawing more and I will try to go with the "less is more".  Does the pitch and tone sounds right?

I can not hear the link to photobucket.

Why can some see it and others can't?  What can I do to fix it?  Sorry I struggle with technology.

It sounds like a pretty good front end "single note" with no drop or back end "2nd note".  I think once you figure out how to separate the front end and back end it will begin to sound pretty good.  I finally just started drawing a long single note and then dropping it off, about one and a half to two seconds worth.  You get a long drawn out yeeeaawwwk sound.  Didn't sound anything like a turkey, but it helped me get a feel for putting the front end and back end together.  Then once I figured that out and sped it up to about a half a second for both ends it started to sound more like a turkey.

I feel funny giving advice about using a trumpet because I'm a ways from being good on one.  But I hope this helps some.

You are doing pretty good for just starting. I can tell you are not cupping your hands over the end of the trumpet. That will help with the back pressure. You are yelping to fast. Like the others have said slow it down and draw the air a little instead of popping it. Your yelps are more like a cluck than a yelp. Try to lengthen your yelp out about twice as long as you are doing. You are popping the yelp instead of drawing the air in and dropping the jaw. Don't get discouraged because I think you are close to making good yelps.

You should be able to take what you already have and get a pretty good cluck out of it, just need to work on drawing it out and consistently hitting both the high and low notes for the yelp. Try to work on just hitting and holding single notes, then once you get comfortable with that you can start putting them together into turkey talk. For example, try to hit and hold the high front end note of the yelp. When you can do that, start dropping your jaw after holding the note for a second or two. Then you can decrease the amount of time you hold the high note until it starts to sound like a proper yelp.

Thanks and keep the info coming.  I use the iPad to record myself all the time that helps a lot.  My next question, how close am I to hunting?  I like a challenge but I am at a point where I need to know if I should keep going or hang it up.

Closer than killing.  Just kidding, I can't pass up and easy one like that.

I don't think it will take you to long.  Your off to a good start.  You'll be messing with it one day and hit the right note and you'll think dang that's what they were talking about.

You're very close so don't give up now. Like guesswho said, one day it just clicks so keep on practicing like me.

Can someone help me with finding Savduck's video on using a trumpet?  I have looked and tried a few searches and come up empty.  Thanks

wisconsinteacher

I found it in case anyone is looking.  You think you have it then you listen to Del and realize you have a long ways to go.
