I have a older 835 with 28" unported barrel. Got some chokes to try and I'm about ready to go pattern it. My question is with the 28" barrel am I going to see a big difference in performance with different chokes. 24" seems to be the common length that most guys are posting results from and I was just curious what I should expect. If I go with the same constriction chokes the 24" barrels post are showing will my pattern be too tight.

I think that you may see more even patterns with that 28" barrel, especially if you "deep clean" it which I'd highly recommend. I don't think that you'll see patterns that are too tight. In my experience with 835 barrels over the years, I've just found it much easier to get good even patterns with the longer barrels.

The deep cleaning process will allow you to get all of the gunk out of the bore. It can not harm the bore in any way and will allow you to see how smooth it is and just how shiny it can be. That process was really developed for 835 shooters many years ago but it helps all barrels.

I look forward to hearing about your patterning results.

Thanks,
Clark

P.S. If you are not familiar with the deep cleaning process, you can click on the banner below, go the article "Cleaning a Shotgun Barrel" and you'll find detailed instructions there.

Clark,

Thanks for all the information it's much appreciated. I have watched the video on polishing the barrel and do plan on doing that before I start patterning my gun. Right now I've stocked up on a few chokes and buying different loads. I'm fairly new to all of this and want to do it right. Thanks goes out to this site and everyone who's been so helpful. I'll post up info and pattern pics as soon as I start.
