Last Thursday afternoon my son and I left out with a guy I work with and his 2 boys for NE. We roosted a bird the first afternoon and were sitting under him the next morning. Farmer on the adjoining land started breakin his field up around 5:30 and the bird sat in the tree gobblin his head off until around 7:15. He finally flew down and after us having to reposition a couple times he came in through the woods behind. My son was sitting on my left thigh and I was looking right down his gun barrel at him but he kept sayin' that he couldn't see him. Finally when he was about 10 steps he says (way to loud) "I see him" Well it put the ole tom on high alert and he started walking off puttin'. It actually helped because he had his head up high and he blew him down around 25 steps away. Stone dead. 11.25" bear 1" spurs After lots of pictures, texting, huggin' and a few tears we were walking back out to the field when I saw another red head. We dropped down and crawled up behind a log on the edge. I told him that it was a jake and 2 hens. He said "call that sucker up here" so I did and he smoked him too!! I tell ya that little 20 gauge with the Federal HW 7's is pure poison on them. I actually filled 2 of my NE in one shot the first 30 minutes we were the Friday morning. It was COLD and he didn't want to shoot but was beggin me too so I took 2 out in one shot. We drove back to Ozark and dropped the boys out. Other dad and I drove 500 miles back to NC Kansas and met up with my dad and one of his buddies. We hunted 4 days up there and even though numbers appeared to be really low I managed to fill both my tags. I have had a great season with my son and friends. Made lots of memories and can't wait to do it again.
