I know this is a Turkey Hunting Forum, but there are a good number of waterfowlers here as well, as witnessed in the past season. Those of you who love chasing ducks and geese in the Fall may want to know about this latest offering from EM. A lot of development and work has been put into this load, along with some very interesting technology..

The 2012 SPEED BALL Waterfowl Load

Here is a cut-away of the shell.  It has three major innovations:

1.  Speed Ball™ – an elastomeric ball in the base of the wad that accelerates pellets without boosting chamber pressures (patent pending).

2.  MV² pellet that sits in the base of the shell – copper-clad, steel-core pellets that are Heavier Than Steel® but with a soft, dense outer copper layer fuzed to the steel, metallurgically.  This gives us about 22 times the copper thickness of copper-plated lead or steel; you just can't get this kind of copper thickness without the proprietary technology we're using.  The copper raises the density of the pellet.  Patent pending.  Copper plating puts a copper coating on the pellet that is roughly 1/6 of the thickness of a sheet of paper.

3.  HEVI-Shot layer on top.  6 existing patents.

So we use the layer technology of HEVI-Metal, the density of Heavier Than Lead® and Heavier Than Steel®, and the new Speed Ball™ technology to get really fast speeds safely.

The benefits to the hunter:

Higher pellet counts in the 30-inch circle than you get with HEVI-Shot.

Nearly matches the lethal energy of HEVI-Shot, pellet size for pellet size, out to 60 yards (but far exceeds the energy of anything else).

Cheaper than HEVI-Shot, more than $1/shell cheaper.

It won't be out until July. It's roughly $1 per shell cheaper than straight Hevi-Shot Duck runs. The math should be done off of that. Plus, rebates should be expected as the Fall rolls around to sweeten the pot.

another gimmic shotshell in my opinion.  I kill ducks fine with 1oz #3 steel reloads.  If people would worry more about the art of decoying birds than the art of seeing how far they could kill them they wouldn't need this "gimmic" ammo.  Off soap box.  :toothy9:

Let the little twenty EAT!!!!

10 per box, 100 per case.

Opinions are fine, every one is entitled to them. Not everyone decoy's birds, nor is worried about shooting as far as possible. They just want to be able to have trust in their equipment to get the job done. As with any load, patterning and choke selection are the final word. There are jump shooters in the crowd, as well as goose hunters who just want more horsepower at a more reasonable price. Not everyone reloads. There are many options out there, and this is just one. Nowhere on the box does it say that you MUST use these shells as the only resort to kill birds. "Gimmic" or not, here they are. Try them, or don't. Different strokes for different folks. At least someone gave those interested a heads up  :)

3" 870 Shell Shucker

So this will be cheaper than HeviShot Duck, and better than either HeviSteel or HeviMetal?

Do the listed shot sizes refer to the size of the Hevi pellets in the load, or to the size of the Copper/Steel pellets?

TrophyTracker

The listed shot sizes are based on the size of the MV2 pellets.

I've shot Hevi-Metal for the past 2 years and have been very satisfied, so I think I'll wait for someone else to test these out before I commit. Could be another gimmick, could be great. I don't trust much of anything these shell mfg's claim....especially after seeing EM's add for Mag Blends.

Interesting idea!

Look forward to some reviews on their performance on live targets next season!

It is a lost art...

more overpriced ammo that they will change next year
it's not the harvest,it's the chase

I've always had great success with HeviShot products, especially when the alternative is steel. If it takes 2 or 3 steel shells to kill a bird (which isn't uncommon) a single shot of HeviShot is way more effective and you rarely have cripples. Just makes sense.
