Taking a youth tomorrow!!
April 20, 2012, 10:18:06 AM
It's like opening day to me. I've been watching this big gobbler at his grandmas. I remember thinking "I can't wait to shoot him!" then I remembered promising this young man I'd take him this year. Idk, something inside me changed, I haven't killed a pile of birds or anything by any means I just love calling them up and sharing that excitement of the hunt behind the gun or not!
So tomorrow I introduce a youngin to this great sport of turkey hunting!

Good luck. No better part of hunting than helping a youth bag their first turkey!

Good Luck. I am taking my nephew out with me on the first of May. He is not old enough to hunt yet but he sees how excited I get and he wants to experience the hunt first hand. There is nothing better than introducing a youngster to this great sport. I am usually more excited for them than I am for my self. God Bless you for taking the time. They will appreciate it.

I have not shot a ton of birds either, but I have taken 8 kids on their first turkey hunt. All but one loved it. I know I get more excited then them and I put more pressure on myself to get them a shot. Go out and relax and teach the kid how to have fun even if you don't get one. If you do that, he will be hooked.

Thanks gents! We are hunting out of a blind. I don't know if he can sit still yet, I've never hunted with him.
I do know he killed a squirrel last fall and was super excited. He's not really old enough to deer hunt yet but I think turkey hunting is a great way for him to learn big game. I hope, I really hope he gets the whole show. From what I've seen from the woods lately, there should be some super lonely toms out there.
I was thinking of using a jake and a hen decoy setup. It will give him something to look at if things get boring. I figure he's good til about 9 or 10.

Im taking a blind along too, i dont really use them ever but with some rain in the forcast I thought he isn't going to last long if he gets all wet.
Used a blind last year on a youth hunt and it worked out great, 2 jakes pitched right the the decoy and I was able to talk him through it and move around a little so he could have a good shot with a rest and not worry about getting busted

Way to step up and take a kid hunting. I only wish someone offered me when I was that age. I had a blast last season helping my son get his first bird, my friend's son get his first two birds, my friend get his first bird, and my buddy get his first 2 birds on a double. Overall, it was definitely my most memorable season so far that involved a lot of good jobs, a few back slaps, and watching a father/son embrace after his son killed his first bird.
