The strange butt stock is a cast iron canister that holds the air pressure.  According to the vido they could get 40 shots with a .46cal roundball that would shoot through a 1" board at 100 yards.  Was a repeater as well.  Wild stuff.

I read a article that mentioned they carried air rifles with them but thas the first pic I've seen of one, suprising for the time period.
