Hey guys, first post.  i would like to pick your brain about 410's.  i have a good youth gun for my son and not sure yet but he maybee ready to hunt.  i have long range 3" 6 shot, but have not come across anything else.  i am going to pattern it this weekend.  i also understand a large amount of people who say wait till they can shoot a 20 ga, but thats not what i am here to argue.  i am just here to learn about 410 triumphs and epic fails

Hevi shot makes .410 ga. 3" Hevi-Duck in #7 Hevishot.  On Sale at Natchez Shooters 'Supply for $17.99
This is Hevi 13.  Should do well at 25 to 30 yards.

I would go with K9Doc's advice and buy the #7 hevi duck load and try them out.  If that doesn't work I'd try to find some 3" lead #7.5 shot and limit shots to 25 yards max.  I killed my first bird with a .410 shooting 3" #6s close to 20 years ago but he was only about 15 yards away and took quite a bit of stomping afterwards.

I got picked apart on another forum about using a 410.  People say its an expert gun, not a kid gun and that should not be allowed in the turkey woods.  As long as you let the bird come into 20 yrds or less i do not see the problem

Don't sweat what those people had to say. What's important and admirable is that you're getting your son out in the turkey woods, and assuming he's ready, you'll be doing it sooner than you would if you waited until he could step up to the 20ga. Pattern your gun, know your maximum effective distance (which will probably be pretty close), stick to that as a guideline and have a good time in the woods with your boy.

Good luck to you both this spring.

Thanks, my plan is to hunt from the blind, with a tripod.  we will practice from blind so he is used to it.  i will prob throw out a jake mounting a hen and a nother hen 5 ft from the blind so i can try and draw em in to 20 yrds or less, hope it works.  i killed 3 gobs with him in two hunts last year so he is a good luck charm.  first time i ever took him i got a triple beard, than got two nice gobs with one shot in the fall.  its his turn
