All my turkey guns have Sumtoy bases screwed directly into the receiver, which I like a lot. My son is getting a Retay Gordion that's not drilled and tapped for optic mounts (I think it has one hole to help secure the rail), so I'd have to get it drilled and tapped to receive a receiver mounted base. Been reading about Meadow Creek rib mounts for a few years and I've never heard anything negative. I haven't really considered them before because: 1) I don't like the aesthetics of the rib mount (I'm really quirky about how stuff looks); 2) I'm uncertain how the sight picture will be with the rib mount vs. receiver mount; and 3) I question the rigidity/stability of a rib mount so far as holding zero. There are plenty of advantages that have been stated regarding the use of Meadow Creek rib mounts. I'm thinking of one now that I haven't considered. I wear readers so I have trouble seeing things up close. Would the rib mount help with that since it's further away from my eye? I've been holding up documents further away to approximate how far away the rib mount would be, and can read them more easily than I can the receiver mount distance. I haven't been missing turkeys, but now I think the rib mount would be an inexpensive, logical switch for me.
My questions are:
1. Has anyone wearing readers noticed being able to see the reflex image better with the rib mount?
2. Are there downsides to using a rib mount?
3. The Meadow Creek brand rib mounts are hard to find right now. There are "knock-offs" that are available at a lower cost. What do you think of the "knock-offs"?
