I had a great final hunt to fill my 3rd Va tag. After starting my day at 7am, I immediately got a gobble on my first series of calls from a high point. I got set up and managed to work what ended up being three mature birds with a hen as well as a separate mature bird that came from the other direction. All strutted and stayed out of range. But I had eyes on them the entire time.

The birds hung up and strutted  for over an hour before going back into the woods where they came from, gobbling on their own.

I finally was able to get up, and made a big loop around them, got up on the ridge, and within two minutes, they were all on my lap. It was very thick vegetation, and they were all in full strut and gobbling. I could not get them to separate for a shot. It was intense!

Finally, one of them broke away from the others, and I was able to kill him at 15 yards. It was a great way to end the season. Not an upgrade but a nice long beard.

The wife went to Florida with our SIL, so I've got a few days free. So of course today was a washout. ::) But the next couple of days look good. :icon_thumright: I've already got all my stuff laid out for the morning hunt. :turkey2:
I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Thanks everyone, it was a fun season.  Exact opposite from last year!

I think that may be it for my season though.  I still have a Pa tag and would like to meet up with Wildspur for a hunt, but he has a tendency to cancel on me, so we shall see.

Good luck Rut and everyone else.

The Nj season comes to an end for me, as my last tag was filled.  As you all have read my reports, I've been covered up in Jake's all season long. On 5/7 I shot a super Jake on a great hunt. He gobbled like mad. The day after that Jr. did as well. His scored greater than mine. So I did not score him.

Today was a great roost hunt again. Birds went off in all directions. However.. it didn't go our way early. Multiple set ups worked to our advantage as we got em cranked up and coming. As they were ready to commit, the farmer decide to drop off some equipment in his field. Sending the birds away. (Here we go again) NG  :angry9:

A half hour passes and I'm still in disbelief. I close my eyes for a minute and jr gets one to gobble, then another. Two Tom's start working there way in. Not sure which one I'm going for yet.. the first cuts through an opening @35 and he has a pipe on him. The 2nd is the strutter. As I make the decision. The strutter gets to the same opening, I'm locked in on him. Then it happens "CLICK" jr set up 40 yards back recognizing what just happened. He started calling to calm them down a little bit. They walked off gobbling as I eased another into the chamber. (Here we go again) WTH just happened that never happened before :angry9:

So... now I sit thinking. Po'd. Early season dot issue. A miss fire. I look up and take one upstairs to the big man. :cross2:
It's just not meant to happen for me this year and I chuckled.

It was quiet and I contemplated packing it in. Jr gets em going again. They come, but don't commit and leave.  Needless to say, it's one of them days (seasons) and I'm pretty frustrated. Now I can laugh

An hour passes and YelpOnTheWay.. takes a buzz about a hundo yards down a row and puts out some sweet talk. A bird gobbles, I don't hear it. He hot foots it back. He says one cut him off. He hits him again, now they cut the gap. I hear him, He's on the way. Jr sets up in back of me again. They came fast, he steps out and stands motionless examining the area. Then another, another, another! 4 long beards. They hang up , one comes within 30 yards. I can't get one off on the close one and wait. They are all calm and don't appear to be nervous. (Me? My hearts in throat) The bird in the back still stands motionless. The strutter struts at 40. The other, I had no play on as well. The close bird and the motionless were in line briefly, no shot. I would've had TwoWithOne, that's if it fires. The close one steps behind another tree and the man with the red neck tie, Mr. Motionless gets it. This is definitely one to remember. It's been a fun season for us with action everyday.
More to follow in Pa. Ny.
