Strutting Hen

We had another cool experience during youth season, on Saturday morning I called up a total of 8 different hens with the trumpet. This particular one came in mad, yelping her head off. I yelped back at her with the trumpet and she strutted and was spitting and drumming. She did this probably 30 minutes in front of us, just like a gobbler would, strut, walk 3 or 4 steps right, turn, spit, and strut back to the left. Crazy experience, my first time seeing one do it in the wild.

Yes it's unusual but occasionally it does happen. I agree it's neat seeing them do this ...

Tom007

Yes, I've seen this in the Fall.

I've had them do the same. I've had them assault my decoys and gobble too.

I've had a hen before come to me yelping etc and other hens come from a different direction and take that hen in front of me off in a different direction.. Amazing what they do sometimes ...

It's like they didn't appreciate that hen who was yelping etc

I pulled off the road scouting one morning. Lone hen was calling. I called back a few times and shortly she came out in the road strutting. It was really cool to see no doubt.

I would have shot her.

Hey, if you want to be treated like a lady, act like one!  :thanks:

Lol!, that is a terrific experience, thanks for sharing.

The other day I was scouting and spotted 4 hens scratching in the leaves. I was glassing them when a 5th hen joined them. She popped into strut and pushed the other hens around. After 5 minutes of bullying them, I guess she had made her point and relaxed. This was only the second time I've seen that.
The first was in SC hunting over a hen decoy. I called in a solo hen. When she spotted my decoy, she came straight in, popped into strut and pushed the deke around before walking off clucking. Pretty cool experiences.  :icon_thumright:

A friend had a video of a hen Strutting for like half an hour. The hen just kept circling his decoy.

I have not seen it personally, would be neat to see. Have seen two hen gobble.

She strutted for roughly 30 minutes or 40 minutes. My son missed a Jake while she was there or I'm sure she'd have hung around longer lol

I have seen hens strutting 4 times over the years and saw/heard one gobbling. It kind of seems a little surreal.

Very cool photos and experience!

I also had a hen come into me in full strut a couple years back.

She came in behind be when I had birds gobbling in front.  I initially heard her "spitting."  All I could see was a full-fanned bird, and I had to turn around to try and get a shot...  Until it became apparent she was a hen!

She put on a good show for a long time, and came quite close, and was not camera shy....
Did I do that?

Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it.

I was hunting 2 days ago and called in 2 hens. They flew a creek and marched across a field to my DSD leading hen. Then one of them popped into strut and worked over my decoy. It was a pretty cool show. Enjoy fellas.

2nd day of Illinois season this year. Strutted....kinda did a weird gobble .... fought with my DSD upright hen till it knocked it over. Thought i had it on my phone video but I guess I forgot to press the button.  🤣🤣
