Strikers 101

Years ago I made a single slate pot and a slate trough call. No matter what or whose striker I played on either of them, I didn't like the sounds I was hearing. Since I don't like giving up easily, I stuck both in a drawer for later.  Recently, I was talking with another callmaker about a corncob striker I was trying to build, and he suggested I add some split lead shot to the striker to add weight to see how it would effect sound....so I started adding split shot, and I was amazed at the difference weight made in sound. So then, I pulled some other strikers out that I had issues with, and I started experimenting. The added weight turned rejected and so/so strikers into impressive players. Pots that didn't impress, when matched up with strikers they liked, became players. I am absolutely amazed how much mere ounces added or subtracted from the weight of a striker change the quality of sound from a pot or trough call. I appreciate the friendship that facilitated the conversation...I appreciate the suggestion....and I am thankful.  I learned something...and I am thankful for my friends in this turkey hunting and callmaking community.  A drill, split lead shot and some glue go a long way.  I now have more turkey calls I can hunt and use to kill turkeys.

Now that I know a little bit more than I did before, the question in my mind is how much time does the average pot call maker really spend trying to "custom" match a striker to a pot call for sale to the general public?   In a thread below, a gentleman expresses interest  in a "purr pot".   I would be so bold to question if the search should be more for a "purr striker" than a "purr pot".

I sure would be interested in hearing his commentary on strikers.....if he would be willing to share. Not asking for any secrets. Just interested in providing good food for thought and consideration.  I feel I have spent a lot of $$ over the years chasing the perfect turkey killing tools and wasting my money.  With knowledge there is more potential for success......

The weight of a striker is important, and you walk a fine line trying to get it right as not every piece of wood you turn is the same and or ones playing style which opens another can of worms. What works for you may or may not work for the next guy as some like me have a heavy-handed playing style, others are softer players. It's a crap shoot and sometimes it all comes together and sometimes you have to figure it out. Sounds like you had some fun with it so in my opinion it's a win - win.

Yes, I have had some fun with this exercise.....but I still have more questions than answers. I still have one striker I haven't gotten to play like I want yet. But I have two strikers that now are going into the hunting vest that before could have just as well gone into the trash. Now liking a striker or not liking a striker is not enough, I want to know why the striker isn't working for me.  I want to be able to trouble-shoot a striker and make the necessary adjustments required for it to be a player on the pot I want to play it on. Maybe that is an unreasonable expectation, but I guess I'll find that out eventually....or not.
