I talked to Jeff today and he also said to go with a Hickory or a Liberty so I'm grabbing both. Now I just need everything to get here so I can try them out.

I just got on his list for an old hen and a crystal. For those of you who have a persimmon red slate and an old hen. How do they compare?

I am wondering the same thing; I am on the fence between red slate and old hen.

Now that I have my Finnish, Hickory and Liberty strikers, I played them on my Old Hen and Red Slate in a side by side comparison.  Could not find a combination that I would not choose to hunt.  I would say my two calls were very similar in sound.  You won't go wrong regardless of your choice.

The old hen has way less sharp/cut of a front end unless you crank on it a little more. Which might not sound as competition ready but sounds more like a hen imo
