So the guys hunting and filming for profit on public land are the good guys. And the ones that have been warning of the consequences of loose lips are selfish bad guys. What a crock... if you haven't felt the squeeze of loose lip policies you are lying to your self or you aren't a turkey hunter period. Gobblers are a finite resource....hunt because you love it. Not for likes from strange men.

And If you haven't noticed we are currently losing our opportunity with limited draws, later season structure on public lands, limit decreases that target public land hunters, limited tags etc.  Alabama/mississippi/georgia/ohio/kansas/nebraska/oklahoma/South Carolina and many more....... it's HUNTERS that are driving this trend forward by pressuring their DNR due to increased pressure . It's not the non hunting masses your speak of.....FACT

Whatever!

You were bad mouthing Richard Martinez the "Volunteer" Chairman of the Backwater Hunters and Anglers. A group dedicated to introducing new hunters and fisherman to the possibilities available if your not rich and/or don't own land. They are well aware of the battle for lost hunting privileges due to political pressure from antis's.

If you don't think the anti's are coming for your hunting privileges through legislation and political pressure keep your head in the sand. Just ask the folks in Wa. who recently lost spring bear, hound hunting for cougars, and more recently are coming after standard hunting practices for cougars with looming harvest reductions that are not supported by the biology. Or better yet  the reversal of newly enacted wolf hunting seasons because they're supposedly still endangered, come on up to Mn and I'll show you the wolf scat that litters the forest roads or maybe we can howl at the moon and listen to all the replies of this so called endangered species.

The many regs changes you speak of tried to reverse a trend in dropping turkey populations thought to be a result of over harvesting gobblers early in the season.  New light has come to bear on this matter and studies are showing later season start dates don't help and should be reversed. Tennessee will be reversing the later season start dates and the others should follow suit. Reduced limits are an effort to curb dropping populations that seems to be a result of poor habitat.

Ms limited non resident because of the influx of new hunters after the season changes in surrounding states and because its neighboring state Arkansas does a poor job of managing its habitat for turkeys and barely has season but I'm sure your aware of that fact.

I get it. You don't want any new turkey hunters crowding you out. Turkeys for me and none for thee.

If I lived in Minnesota I might have the same thoughts as you. Was up in that part of the world last week-weekend...but I'm from where the impacts of loose lips have crushed public hunting opportunities. And btw Backwoods hunters and anglers are a bunch of liberals. Im a member and give them some money but I know what they are. Cheers

I've been seeing the impacts of the growing demands on public land since the late 70's. It's not something reserved for where your from.

FYI - for those that care the Florida FWC quota page now has the information on how many apply for each quota hunt and the estimated number of preference points needed for selection for each individual hunt.  Should make it easy for those wanting to do some advance planning.  Good luck since many will show four or more points needed for many areas.  This info available now for the deer hunters and should be there for the spring 2025 turkey hunts.
Add - just now glancing at this new FWC section.  It should be very helpful for those adapting to these changing times.

Nice to see those patches out there supporting this great site!

Quote from: joey46 on March 23, 2024, 05:07:31 AMThat is a good Meateater episode.  I've watched it once and skimmed it twice. Doesn't mention the exact Florida area.  Since the reporting system implemented in 2023 isn't discussed guessing it was filmed in 2022 or just prior. Some can guess the location but since it was a quota hunt it can be narrowed down - maybe - a few other clues are there also. I'll look for Boney if I watch it again to check out the recipes Martinez cooks up at the end.

Update - Boney shows at least twice more.  He's a sneaky guy.

I can tell you exactly where they hunted and the year. In fact, I knew they were going to hunt there before they even hunted there. And I HATED knowing they were about to pimp out one of my favorite places to hunt.

Every year I do an information request to Florida FWC to get quota hunt data. It just so happens the giant spreadsheet they send out has EVERYONE'S quota application on it. You can see where all the big name YouTuber's hunt and all that jazz. I actually used this information one time to show a YouTuber the MASSIVE increase in non-resident applications to the region he was pimping out. Guess what? He didn't care cause making a living off wild turkey is now his livelihood. And MeatEater has been doing a GREAT JOB pimping out public lands for profit too in recent years.

Best thing for public land hunting would be to BAN any commercial filming. A ban on all filming would be the best (due to all the rising YouTube influencer wannabes), but would be much harder to get passed.

I quit supporting BHA years ago after it became obvious their main goal was R3. More specifically recruiting as many new hunters as possible. Which benefits them and the industry more than the public land hunter. They were too focused on "Pint Nights" rather than actual projects to benefit public lands. They've had a bit of a reorganization in the past year or so which I hope will get them back on the right path.

The Hunt Quietly podcast recently took a nice dive into BHA and confirmed my suspicions. Good listen and let me know I made the correct choice by quitting to support them years ago. Episode 116.

The MS influx of non-residents actually started BEFORE all the season pushbacks in surrounding states. It just so happens the NR license sales began to explode once the YouTube era kicked off. With NR turkey permit sales nearly doubling from 2018 to 2021. Thankfully MS got the NR quota in place right as other states pushed their seasons back.

Ship has sailed, damage long been done. One WMA saw a ~800% increase in non-rez apps for 2021 after their favorite tuber hunted there in the years prior. We used to draw it with 1 pt in the mid 2010s and now you will be lucky to draw that hunt with less than 4 points.

Never quite understood this excuse. Even the YouTuber's have finally quit using it.

Yeah, COVID gave people more time to turkey hunt. But did COVID influence someone to travel to specific states and regions recently highlighted on YouTube and social media?
