I just got my first trumpet ever, and I really suck.

Well, at least you understand the instructions perfectly.    :TooFunny:

Just keep buying trumpets until you "find" the perfect one(s) ;)   Typically I practice to and from work or when I'm home alone.  Indoor acoustics may also make you think you sound worse than you really do, so practicing outside and recording your playing will give you the best sense of how you sound.  Of course the neighbors and their dogs get real curious as to what's going on...

I make my wingbone calls from all my harvested turkeys and if I'm with anyone who harvest one of their own and give them to them. I can play a wingbone pretty decent. I look at trumpets atleast once a week dreaming about owning one. Just been buying up other things for turkey season. How similar is running a wingbone to a trumpet? Similar or whole differant ball game?

Definitely record yourself. Up close, then at a distance. Practice daily, even several times a day, just not too long at one time. You're gonna get it. Good luck.

We just released an interview on the Off the Roost Podcast with EZ, a member and wingbone maker on this site. We talk with Tony about wingbones, cane calls, trumpets, and how they are similar. Tony gives instructions on how to get started and plays a few calls.

It's getting better, lol. The boss hasn't fired me yet. I can practice inside now cuz it doesn't sound like nails on a chalk board anymore. Consistency is my new goal. I want to thank everyone that has helped me.  Z

He sure can run a yelper. A worthwhile listen for sure.
A quality paddle caller will most run itself.  It just needs someone to carry it around the woods. Yoder409

Thanks for the link I'm defiantley gonna give that podcast a listen. I did purchase my 1st trumpet from irving whitt about a month or so ago. Been playing it multiple times a day for 5-10 min each time. Certainly no Rev. Farmer on it but I have been able to find out I can call clear and with rasp also. I chalk that up to a well made trumpet an less what I'm doing. I can also pick up one of my wingbones now and run it much better also with rasp. I cannot wait to get in the woods with the trumpet an wingbone round my neck. Best of luck this spring boys.

You and me both. I've been trying for years on wingbones and trumpets, but I can't play one to save my life.
