Old chestnut works great for calls, I've done both box calls and pots with it. It's super for pot calls, makes some of the best slate calls around.

I made a little 2.5" slate pot that just screams (for it's size) out of some old chestnut that I found in my shed when I moved in where I live at now, great stuff.

I've turned several over the years.  It's not one of my favorites, but it can make a great sounding call.  It's not native to my area, so I have to track it down on ebay or such.  The pieces I have had were pretty lightweight, so I had to turn them with a bit thicker walls and bottom.

I love the wood for calls..sometimes there is a lot of waste but worth it. I quarter saw most of my own blanks from logs or beams.
