How many prototypes did it take you?

(Just for fun) Call makers, how many prototypes did it take you to find your perfect sound for each type of call that you make?

For example, I had a hunt-worthy "sound"  after 12 pot call attempts. However, 40-50 pot calls made later and I still feel like I am not making the absolute best sounding call that is possible to make, and I know there is room for improvement . Always after that new and more realistic sound....
-Tube calls - I made a working hunt-able tube call with good sound on the first try, but when it comes to playing one I have a long ways to go!
-Trumpets.... Never attempted one but looking forward to the journey. I'm scared it will become an addiction.

Been doing it over 25 years, still working on a better sound, be doing it until I die.

About a large garbage can full before I got satisfied! And still looking for the perfect one, if it's possible!

That's the sentiments of a great call maker!!!

It took me a pile of scrap to get a trumpet that was acceptable to my ears. After more than 500 trumpets, I am still fine-tuning my recipe, it is a lifelong journey. Not sure perfection will ever be realized, but I sure love the challenge.

As a buyer and player of calls that's the beauty of buying calls, I enjoy the different styles, perfection and craftsmanship. So in my opinion, I don't think you will ever find the most perfect call, but you will come mighty close to finding the sounds and tones you like ... AS we all know everyone's turkey sound / tone is different in what we chase in a call and builder..

Good Post ...

I have probably made 200 -300 (ish) box calls. I only make Cost style boxes with the exception of an occasional custom style box design of my own. Without the video Mr. Cost put out, I probably would not have ventured into call making...so I figured making his style of call was only fitting. Plus I think the Cost style boxes are the best looking and showcase custom work the best  :happy0064:  My early calls would call and kill birds, but they needed much improvement to my ear as well as the quality of the look (checkering, inlays, finish, etc). It is a tough hobby when you are self taught for the most part, although I have had several call makers assist me along the way. Being consistent is what I have found to be one of the most important and hardest things. Seeing someone take a bird with one of your calls is very rewarding and makes it all worth it IMO.
