Is there a gap between the surface material and the sound board (I.e. between slate and glass)? If so about how much of a separation is there?

There's a gap yes, but the answer to that question I don't think most makers will just freely share. I'd suggest starting by doing some research on THOgamecallsforums.com and then making adjustments as you go and work on calls.

There's probably many call makers on here that might give you some pointers but they're not gonna just hand over the recipe. Good luck with your research and call making endeavors.

Custom calls forum has the best info. Tho has a lot but as said above  most have their own measurements after a lot to trail and error and firewood. Keep  good records of your measurements,  1/16" on any will change tone. Even wood from same lots will be different.

yes go tho read up   for 3.5 surface a good starting point is thickness of glass between sound board and playing surface and go from their little closer higher pitched call little further away from play surface deeper sounding call  bottom thickness 1/4 and sides hair under 1/4 then u got the gap around sound board 1/8 what I call tight sounding call little more looses running call pedestal dount get it to round or thick   when gluing surfaces get into doing it same every call  same amount glue if u give surface 1/4 twist when sitting surface and same weight or clamps   personaly I thing its easyer get turkey sound from crystal or glass ,,, like said above good luck u will make some firewood  start out cherry walnut maple   take measurements and change one thing at time ,,, and when u build a call u think sounds great tear it apart measure every thing and build another lol

Thanks everyone. I now have a starting point which is all I really want. I understand why the details would be hush hush as far as specifics go and I appreciate your willingness to set me in the right direction. The rest is up to me know.
