Let's just say the weather was interesting for our trip. We stayed from Wed. evening until Saturday noon and had no encounters with gobblers. We did see 6 or hens and a jake, so it was not a total bust. The birds are there, but just weren't gobbling... at all!
The first pic is of a pond on a mountain top on Friday AM. The sky was overcast all day with intermittent rain. The temps at this place were at least 15-20 degrees cooler than down lower where we hunted. The clouds were enveloping the mountain top so you couldn't see more than 50 feet in front of you.
Friday night we got to bed around 10 pm. About an hour later we awoke to a storm unlike I had experienced before. Lying in the tent, I experienced thunder louder than I have ever heard and lightning brighter than I have ever seen. With only a nylon tent between yourself and the intensity of the storm, it gives you a quick check of perspective... Let's just say there was some praying going on and some thanksgiving when it passed. As I walked the road into my setup the next morning before daylight, I noticed a white piece of bark lying in the road that wasn't there the afternoon before. I knew what had happened and took this pic on my way back out... wonder why the thunder seemed so loud?
We battled winds of about 15-20 mph much of the time we were there. Only in the lulls between gusts could you have heard anything but the wind. The birds didn't cooperate, but the scenery sure was nice. This is a pic of the mountains in the distance from the ridge where I hunted Saturday AM. There were a couple of nice clearings along a logging road where I hunted. It looked like a great spot and the road was littered with turkey... litter.
Maybe next year...
