Hi everyone.

This is my first post here (I'm not counting one that I posted 2 years ago lol). I've spent around 30 minutes determining where to post my question not to be laughed at lol
Hopefully, that's the right place. Anyways, turkey hunting is new for me, as I've got several friends who've been into it for years. I was looking for good info on tukey calls and google directmed me to y'all folks forum, and I realized I am registered here. Good to know, that there are so many people and good info here.

Anyways, I was looking at turkey calls thinking which one to select for myself. I wanted one that's easy to use for a newbie, as I said, I've got very little experience yet. What do you folks think of Primos starter pack? I believe this is a normal call to start with and the instruction has detailed exercises for practicing.

However, I am still not really confident about it, as I don't want to mess up with something that I will have to struggle with, ya know.
So I will be glad to hear your reccomendations on what may work better for a beginner in turkey hunt. Perhaps, there are vendors who support this forum and they have solutions that they can recommend an comment on. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

Hello sir, and welcome to the forum!!!

That's not a bad place to start for something cheap. Only thing I think you will find difficult to use is the Sonic Dome mouth call. For me, those mouth calls were absolutely atrocious to try and run. I was raised running a normal diaphragm though, so maybe that's why I can't comfortably play one of those. I do know Quaker Boy makes a "Beginners" mouth call, straight double read, with instructions. It's probably the easiest diaphragm call out there to get hen sounds out of, and if you can get good with it, it will kill just as many turkeys as all the other fancy cuts on a diaphragm.

I know you also said maybe a board sponsor, Gooserbat makes fantastic mouth calls as well, and I'm sure if you chatted with him, he would have more of a beginner call to offer as well that's easier to play.

Welcome, I am a huge fan of pot calls and I think they are easy to learn to run, several members on here make very nice custom pot calls that are priced very reasonable, go to the pot call section and look around

Man I would say stay away from that set myself. It's junk. If you wants some stuff to just play with and get started I have a decent little custom box call, one or 2 mad call pots and some strikers i can send you for nothing you just pay shipping. I would use the box call and take the money you were going to spend on that and buy an amazing slate call from strut zone calls he goes by daddy rat on here. Can get one for $47 and is one heck of a call at any level. Pm me if want the stuff.

Welcome to the forum. Before I started getting into the custom calls this year my go to brand was Primos, I have always liked their deer and turkey hunting stuff. For me their mouth calls felt the most natural in my mouth (I use their diamond series mouth calls) I have not tried the style of mouth call you have pictured in this pack though.

One thing you may want to try is the Mouth Call Mechanics Kit found here, it will help you find what mouth call is best for you, or so it says anyway. I intend to pick it up myself.  https://www.callingallturkeys.com/mouthcallmechanics

As far as what I have seen in my limited time turkey hunting you can't go wrong with a box call or a pot call, they are pretty easy to run, the one thing I will point out with the box call is be sure you get the proper type of chalk for it and don't use blackboard or street chalk on it as they have oil in them and that will mess up the call. I am sure your friends will explain that to you better so don't get all nervous about it.

Welcome to a wonderful new sport, it is addicting and no other hunting like it that I have done.

I would suggest a good box call or pot call. If you are wanting something pretty affordable I would look at Spring Creek box calls and order a walnut over mahogany short box. For a pot call I would PM Daddy Rat on here or Strut zone game calls and ask what he suggests for a beginner. Either call will be in the 50$ range and you will have great success with either one. I tend to like glass or crystal pot calls with aluminum or slate sound boards. Walnut and Osage are great woods for the pots and many others are great also. Have fun!!!!

:welcomeOG:   :wagon: Welcome to old gobbler!  There is a guy on the bannerhead here. He's good and he's affordable and he makes a turkey killer pot call. Look up Enticer Turkey Calls. You won't be disappointed and he has demos on each and every pot, look him up.
We wait all year, why not enjoy the longbeard coming in hunting for a hen, let 'em' in close !!!

Wow, thank you so much for all your replies, folks! I am happy to get so many recommendations from your experience. Since you say, that the call I was considering for myself is somewhat difficult to use, I will probably get in touch with the folks you mentioned for a better alternative. I am so glad that I haven't orederd one yesterday and decided to post my question here instead.
Cheers! :gobble:

I was thinking you wanted to stay with store bought stuff but I agree with Cris-O and Yelpy, if you want to get something better get with Spring Creek box calls I have a scratch box from them and with talking to them they are very helpful and are willing to answer any questions you might have and it will be a much better quality box call. I intend to get a walnut over walnut and a mahogany over mahogany from them eventually myself and they are beautiful calls to boot.

X2 on this. Al`s Field Grade Box Calls are just great. A little less money than some but no less in quality IMHO. They made a walnut over poplar for me that just sings!
