DIY paint job question

I am gonna attempt my first DIY yourself paint job on just the stock and forearm of my new gun. I would like to leave the background color black and just paint some leaves on. My question is, can I get away with that or do I have to primer first and then paint the whole stock?

I'm no expert. However I have painted my 870 several times..... Wipe it down with acetone or denatured alcohol. Let dry the let her eat... Have fun.

Also don't forget to use Matte Clear coat to protect you work.

Terry, if you want black as your base color there is no need to prime. Just clean and paint. Allow adquete time to dry and cure before clear coating or handling.

are the forend and stock styrene?  The paint you use may or may not adhere without priming and surface preparation (roughing).  Determine from the paint can what is required.  It'll save you grief later.  On page 7 of this lengthy old thread is a tutorial I lifted from another site on effective rattle-canning.  Earlier pages detail what happened when I didn't take the required steps correctly to ensure adherence.  Better to do it right than to see it peel off later.
