What to do after tagging out

I have had quite a few people in my area asking what to do with their bird after shooting it since they dont plan on doing a body mount so I thought I would post a little info on the subject, and hopefully some more experienced people will join in as well.

So here are some steps for gutting a wild turkey.........

Either lay the turkey on its back, or hang it up by its feet.

Follow the breast down to the rear of the bird until it narrows to a point between the legs, then pull up on the tip and cut the bird open by making a shallow horizontal incision between the tip of the breast and the anus. You have to make the incision large enough to pull out the entrails.

Cut around the anus by following the intestine back and then cutting around its exterior. Be careful as you don't want any of the contents getting on the turkey.

Remove the crop by making a cut on the neck of the turkey, reaching down and pull it out. It is located at the top of the breast.

Rinse out with water and blot with paper towels.

Personally, I prefer to clip the wings, and pluck the bird before doing this, but I have seen it done right in the field so I guess it really is a matter of personal preference.
Hope that helps, and if anyone else has any helpful suggestions feel free to chime in!
