Got a call in Friday and Unboxed it last night.  I played two or three notes on it and went to bed.  I got up this morning to go hunting and when I went to pick up the call to put it in my vest the surface was cracked.... what would cause this?  It wasn't that way when I went to bed last night.

Yep, contact the maker. He may be able to repair it or replace it.
No trees were hurt in the sending of this message, however a large number of electrons were highly inconvenienced.

David,This happens to even the best of the best callmakers!!
I believe it has to do with a change of geography, type of wood and temps and moister.
Crystal surfaces are a pain in the butt sometimes for all callmakers. :o

SCC, I wasn't trying to blame the call maker.  Just try to figure out how one second the call was perfect and the next it had a crack....  first time anything like this has happened to me, and didn't see and posts about surfaces cracking.

Yep, It happens I just got a glass pot recently and it cracked right through the middle --that is how they usually crack when the pot may not be dry enough and the wood shifts.. it was fixed but In my opionion they just don't sound as good after that...

Unfortunatly it does happen to everyone. I have some curly maple that I use a lot. This wood has been cut, sawed and stacked in a garage for almost 8 years now. I have a crystal that I made myself in 2005 and have hunted hard with it with no problem what so ever. The other day I made the same pot out of the same wood and put a crystal surface in it. It cracked three days later?

Some say to "double turn" pots and this won't happen. I've tried it before and didn't notice any more or less movement. Like was said, I too think a lot of it has to do with the geography chance and weather differences in the two areas. I know that not sawing the wood correctly will also effect the amount of movement. There's a little more to it than just running a piece through the saw.

On a side note, I was at gander mountain last night looking over some friction calls and a new callmaker was there also asking me some questions about what to get. I took him over to the counter where they had some opened for use and almost all the crystal/glass calls were cracked.

I agree with whats been said above, Crystal is a pain and it cracks so much easier then Bronze Glass. It seems to be affected a lot by the geographic locations a lot more that any other glass. IMO the difference between bronze glass and crystal in sound is very close to the same, but in strength there is a big difference.

I hate to admit to it, but I have had crustal problems for years, that is why I went to smaller glass diameters and brozed glass. I know I have pots out there that have cracked, just haven't heard, chances are the change in humidity is the culpret, as most callmakers are not going to turn pots from wood thatis too high in moisture content, knowing that it is. I would just contact the callmaker and I am sure they will be the first to admit that they will make it right. pappy
