CALLING FALL TURKEYS-- THE OTHER 50%

Walking in the pheasant fields with my Father from age 7-8-- nothing was more exciting then in seeing a flushed up cackling rooster pheasant that was connected solidly on. So flushing up a Fall turkey by myself or with one of my late pheasant dogs was also very exciting.  My misses were probably clean in the air. Very few woundings in the air. Won't reveal my name- but I did make a skeet shooting magazine in the early 1990s with a winning score of 92 out of 100 on 12 gauge registered doubles on a windy day. So- for me, the wingshooting skills are still there.
That said, I also can call them in .  I only have 2 weeks to work with in New York and just a 1 week Fall season in New Jersey. Probably 6 times total on the weekends. As the years go on my own voice calling from my voice box has improved a heck of alot. Nothing like Jack Dudley mind you- but I have called them in Spring and Fall this way. The Fall is when I hear alot of purring in the woods and my Kenny Morgan Friictionwood goes with me. I rely on the quavers--hence my username in his honor.

I feel safer in the Fall when I decide to gobblealso. I have an orange hat on anyway as other season are open . Hearing a jake half-gobble in response happens sometimes. Once in a blue moon- I get a longbeard to gobble back as well. Those 6 days go by fast. Got shut out last Fall- but am hopeful this coming Fall. Whatever it takes. Be back next Friday.

I have a good public hunting area for Fall turkey. I call in birds all the time. It's a good time and I dont care what I shoot. Archery season is a months long pursuit and gun is nine days.  It's all good in the Fall.

I have never REALLY hunted them in the fall. With that said I do get an archery tag every year and if and when one walks under me in a tree I wack it,but I dont think that is "fall turkey hunting". Once while deer hunting I came across a huge flock of turkeys and stalked close enough for a shot and I could never get. Then I accidentally busted the flock up and they all ran in every direction. I did have a mouth call in my pack and called a bit....then it seemed they all came running back one by one. I ended up geting a Jake out of the group.

Good replys--- Fall turkey hunting is alot of fun! Sometimes early morning cutting will get a response from a jake! Love hearing that half-gobble!!! Then, I scatter them.
