My first attempt on making buckskin.

Well I harvested my first deer with my bow. I decide I was going to attempt to make my own brain tanned buckskin for my new Plain style quiver. I really enjoyed the process it was work that  is no joke. In the process I did receive a chemical burn while I was removing the grain side. I used eggs since I think my old lady would get a little mad using the blender on the deer brains.I did hand soften the hide, which next time I'll use a frame. I used oak punk when I smoked the hide, which gave me this nice dark brown color. I made some mistakes during the smoking process but overall I'm happy with it. I will make a nice quiver and a great way to remember the hunt. I do have the bug now. I have three more hides that my landowner gave me for helping him butcher his deer. Here is some pictures

Sounds cool!  Your pics aren't showing.

It does sound neat and I have always wanted to try to tan some hides but have never tried. I kind of enjoy scraping and stretching raccoons so I think I would enjoy tanning and the finished product. I sure wish I had a green deer hoist like yours!!!!

Congrats on the deer. My wife has mentioned wanting to try making buckskin. Never have attempted it though.

I'm having issue with resizing the photos through photo bucket. Here is great site for informational and supplies. http://www.braintan.com/

Congrats on deer! Nice looking job for first time. A friend of mine cleans his hides with a pressure washer.

Always wanted to try that. That's awesome! Never knew you had to smoke them.
