Well after taking my 1st kid out last weekend and him hating it I had to give it one more try helping a kid out.  Well this kid earned his strips.  16 hours of turkey hunting and he did not quit.  I told him the goal of the day was to be safe and have fun.  We set up 8 times and saw birds on 7 of them.  We also were part of a kill.  We joined up with my buddy and his mentor kid on a large flock with two toms.  We set up and a jake broke away and the kid shot it.  My kid was excited to see it happen and I told him he did the right thing by not shooting because of safety and distance.  All in all we saw over 30 birds and had hens in shooting range 2 time but no gobblers.  At one point I asked if he was having fun and he said I was getting him addicted to turkey hunting.  He still has a 5 day tag later in the year so I hope I can take him again and that the toms come in not the hens.

Been there done that, even with my own son, Hunting isn't for everyone, at least the first child tried it...and you made it available for him, and that's all you can do.

Thats awesome that your introducing kids to hunting that may not be given the opportunity otherwise.

The icing on the cake for me was when mom said that without me he would have never had an opportunity to to turkey hunting.  Now he is armed with a box call, mouth and pot call from Joe Slaton.  He is giving his buddy the other mouth call Joe sent to me to give to the young hunter.

Sounds like he had a great time and is hooked even without getting a bird.  :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:
