Heading out in the morning to pick my son up his first shotgun...getting him a Mossberg 500 Super Bantam Turkey...gotta drive 100 miles to get the darn thing cause I didn't plan ahead very well and the season opens Saturday...so off I go and we will go shoot it Friday afternoon when he gets out of school and then see if we can't roost one for Saturday...doesn't look like Gander Mountain has alot of ammo to choose from so the Rem Nitro #5 or Win Supreme #5 will have to do until we can sit down and really pattern the gun and try out some different choke tubes and shells...we won't be shooting at anything over 30 yards just due to the thickness of the area so hopefully it will work out and I can call him in his first bird !!!

He doesn't know any of this and I've been so darn excited that I have not slept in days !!!!

Anyone had good results with the factory x-full choke from Mossberg?...

redarrow

I would take the Wins. over the Remmys.

I picked up a mossy 20 ga. 500 grand slam turkey sereis. I put in a indian creek choke and hevi-13 # 7  get around  135 in 10" @ 40 yards. Never even tried the factory choke
May God bless you all

it's not the harvest,it's the chase

the Hevi-13 #7's might be hard to get around here in 20 gauge but I will look as I have heard you guys getting good results with them...can those be shot out of the factory Mossberg choke?...I think it comes with the x-full in the turkey version...if not a tightwad or undertaker is easy enough to get around here...

I got my wife this exact same gun. We have been shooting it with the factory choke. Its full-x and shoots a good pattern out to 30 yards. If your not planning on shooting any farther than that you shouldnt need to get a different choke before you go out.

Good deal...just got back from getting it...needless to say he's pretty darn excited...he's out back shooting his BB gun for trigger practice...got the Win Supreme #5's so I think we will be ok to 30 or so...will get a Primos Tightwad or HS Undertaker when I can find the Hevi-13 #7's around here...its a rather good looking gun...looks like a toy its so darn short...but its still almost to long for him but he will grow into it by next year easy...

Darn wind is supposed to howl tomorrow...looks like its gonna start after 1 pm though so hopefully we will get to hear one...

Haha I know what you mean. Its about right for my wife who is of a tiny build. But whenever I go to shoot it it feels like im holding a BB gun. It'll be a good gun for your boy to learn on though. I bet he is pumped!!!
Hope you all get on some birds this week. Good luck and safe hunting! :anim_25:

How old is your son? I was talking to a guy at work today about getting my son a 20 gauge.

he's six...but he's been hunting deer with me since he was three from a pop up blind...so I think he is ready...

How did your boys gun pattern those Win. #5's? Judging from your other post it I realize it was good enough to whack that gobbler.

I was just curious,  I shot both the win. #5 and Rem. Nitro #5 friday afternoon and the Rem. patterned alot better for me. I have the mossberg superbantam as well, with an undertaker choke.

Well to be perfectly honest...I don't know...we kinda rolled the dice and just went for it...I got the shotgun Friday and Youth day was Saturday morning...the only range I could find that would let us shoot wanted $20 and said we could shoot it 3 times (it tears up their backer material) so I opted to just wing it...when I cleaned the bird there were only two pellets in the breast...

the factory x-full choke is what we are using...I plan to get him either a PG or a Sumtoy after the season to shoot the HTL loads...more than likely it will be the TSS loads though...
