Tree rat hunting with a dog is a lot of fun!
Good luck with your dog!
My old favorite was a 3 legged German Sheppard  that just layed around on the porch .
Then one day a friends dad said he wanted some squirrel . So he gave me a 22 and off I went , he said take the dog and I thought well that won't be good , but off we went across the pasture to the timber and when we hit the trees the old dogs eyes went up and nose went down . Had a limit so fast I couldn't believe it , he was like a puppy out there !
Would never have believed that old porch dog had that in him .
Believe I squirrel hunted there more than I bow hunted that year .
Enjoy that new one !

Best of luck!  A friend of mine has a squirrel dog. I always made fun, telling him that I'd be danged if I'd pay to feed a dog all year just to hunt bushy tails!  Then I went along. Wow, I had a blast!  I always loved hunting with good beagles and good fox hounds. I don't know why I thought a good cur would be any different. Now I make it a point to go along a few times a year and always enjoy myself!  Congrats on your new buddy!  Wishing you many years of treeing.
Cur? CUR?! We don't feed curs in this household. It's feist's or nothing here. Only thing cur's are good for is keeping the toilet bowl clean.  :TooFunny:

I've had a couple cur's in the past. Neither suited my tastes but they are good dogs. If I lived in a spot that didn't have neighbors right on top of me I'd probably have one. They're just too loud for where I'm at. Love the sound of a good cur on a tree though. Feist's tend to be more eyes and ears though. Don't get as many lay ups but you tend to get fewer dens and slick trees. Not saying that's all cur's do but with the feist's relying more on a hot track, visual sightings or hearing the squirrel, you just get fewer instances like mentioned above. Having said that, a good cur that has good winding abilities will put you on squirrels a feist would typically blow past. Pros and cons to each I suppose.
Didn't mean to imply that your dog was a cur! Lol! Just saying my buddies is. Never hunted with a Feist. But I don't know much on squirrel dogs either.  Guess it's like the old redbone vs Black and Tan with fox hounds!
Oh man, I was just jerking your chain. Was trying to get a rise out of the guys that hunt the cur's really. Always seems to be a bit of banter between those crowds as it seems people either like one or the other. Personally, my preference is for the feist but only because I live where I do. If I weren't in the townhouse, I'd have a cur.

We ran a pup I started last year with 2 older dogs last weekend. Didn't know how he was gonna do after he had laid up all summer. I was surprised when he struck track first. He was the last to the tree but he is coming around. My dogs the black and tan the 2 walkers are my brothers.

Always had a soft spot in my heart for walkers.

Got a pic of your new pup?
Not a good one at the moment. Soon as he trees and I get it knocked down to him, I'll post one. He's done real well though. Treed 3 times the other day. Two trees had squirrels in them but they got into holes too fast. Third tree was just a really hot track though. No way it was in there. My older dog found it after some looking though. Didn't get it. Had them out last Monday. Old dog treed 3 times. Hard to find the squirrels in the leaves. Pup worked some tracks real hard but no dice.
