Today was the closest I've come to killing a bird this year. It was certainly a kill able bird but things didn't quite work out. Only had until about 6:50 to hunt this morning and it started out quite slow to say the least. Hunting partner just laughed and said I was a jinx as he'd heard birds every morning except the mornings I've gone with him. We walked a bit deeper into the woods and just when we were al,out convinced that nothing was going to talk, I cut really hard on my diaphragm call. A bird gobbled back from a distance. We walked closer to cut the gap and I called again, the bird sounded farther away. We moved in again and set up. He'd answer pretty much everything but wouldn't commit so we made a move knowing I only had about 15-20 minutes left to play. As we moved back, I called again and he responded but this time it was much farther to the left than I'd heard him before. Moved up closer to a clearing and set up again. Bird gobbled and was closing the gap to my left. Next thing a bird gobbled to my right. That's when we realized that we'd been playing two birds which would explain why it sounded like he was really moving on. It was a tense few moments waiting to see who was going to show up first as my time was about up. Bird from the right showed up and popped his head up over the briars and that was as close as it got. He didn't like the setup and moved on without offering a shot. Gobbled his head off for a while before this all happened. We're pretty sure it's the same bird his brother in law peppered up the first week which is why he wasn't in the mood to stick around. Of course, the fact that it was kind of a crappy setup since the bird gobbled rot on top of us didn't help matters either.

Long story short, came home empty handed but it felt great to at least be in the game today. Next time, I'm killing one of those birds.

Stay on them hard, it's just a matter of time now.

Yup  just a shame it took this long to get them off the hens enough to get one to work. If I'm not too tired after working, I may try it again tomorrow morning. Just depends on what my buddy feels like doing as well. I know I'm going Saturday morning to hunt for what he refers to as "the biggest bird I've ever seen." Well, so long as the weather holds up anyway. Don't mind hunting in the rain but I'm not using my gun as a rain gauge in a down pour.

Just an FYI but it is against all proper protocol to ever kill the biggest turkey you have ever seen. He must always escape and grow just a little bigger every time you speak of him.

If that's the case, I'm throwing in the towel for this season and letting them all get just a bit bigger. Next year, I'll hammer several big ones.

I plan to try again in the morning as it currently stands but it will be on a different farm. I just hope the birds are back on my side of the road in the morning. We'll wait and see what happens I suppose.

Had to be out at 6:50?
Wow, that sounds like an exciting hour or so.
Couldn't have asked for much more, except a bird.....LOL
