Tail Feathers

I took my 12 year old grandson "Captain Fidget" out today.  We found a hot tom right where we parked.  We slipped in close.  Maybe too close.  After gobbling his head off at coyotes, my calling and everything else that made noise, I though he was about to come strutting down the overgrown lane.  Nope, he came flying right over our heads.  He got a birdseye view of Captain Fidget looking up in awe I think.  He hit the ground about 30-40 yards behind us and we never heard or saw him again.
My fault I guess.  I thought he was off the roost so I called to him.  I thought he was moving, maybe he was just turning around on his limb?  At any rate. we'll be back after him in the morning, coming in from a different direction I think.
Love to hunt the King of Spring!

Just curious?  Do you not call to a bird on the roost?  I'm still learning.

At least he didn't leave his "J" calling card. Give him a load of #5 shot if he flies over again!

All I do is a few light tree yelps and a fly down with my cap. If you call too much while he is on the roost, he will just stay up on the limb and expect you to come to him before he pitches down. I try to act like a hen that flew down and is walking away and ignoring him.

I call very little to one on the roost.  Sometimes, it can cause them to sit on the roost and gobble until they call that "hen" in.  That can lead to real hens answering and coming to him, in which case he rarely comes to the calling I'm doing.
I call enough to let them know I'm there, then hit it more when they are on the ground.
We struck out this morning.  That bird either left, or didn't make a peep this morning.

I only call two or three sparatic tree yelps. And wait for him to fly down.  I then use a turkey wing I keep for the occasion and do a few wing beats.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

You and Capt Fidget get right back out there!  I got a feeling you will get it done!  Eye of Tiger!
