Hens!

Waiting on the WV opener, I have roosted a gobbler almost every night and he has 8 hens with him. Looks like I will be calling to the boss hen to pull him in. If not, maybe I will wait him out until the hens start nesting. Any thoughts?

Good luck on that one! It can be done. Would spend some extra time patterning them. Be where they normally head off of the roost.

Yes good luck on that...most of the time if you start calling she will take him away from you...

Start shooting the hens...

Kidding aside, I would agree with Happy.  Figure out where they go off the roost and then be there the next time.

If that does not work, try aggravating the boss hen (although my experience is that she will lead him away more often than towards me)...  And my last ditch effort would be to aggravate the tom with a few gobbles (and maybe some spittin' and drummin').

Frankly, I have had little luck with a bird that henned up, until the hens leave him behind...  That first day the hens leave him at 10 am, and he is lonely and horny is a good time to call him in and kill him...  Usually I am working on those days though.

Can you set up a trail camera? That could do your scouting for you. Otherwise good luck, the hens have been killing me this year

Hens are making a mockery of me but 30 miles south at Dad's he's not having any problems.  Totally different flocks.

In total agreement about getting ahead of where they want to be. Wouldn't even bother with calling. The gobbler is often times the first bird on the ground anyway. Once he hits the ground might make a Yelp or two but personally, I'd slip in real tight to the roost tree before daylight, stand behind a tree and wait with gun ready. When he hits the ground, give a couple purrs and see what happens. If the hens do come down first, all bets are off.

All else fails, bust them up the night before.  Next morning, they will be trying to get back together and most likely very vocal....Good luck!!!

He's down to roosting with 5 hens. Just seen them in the field 15 minutes ago. He was with 9 hens here lately.
