I have been researching a hunt in Kansas this April.

Anybody here have any pointers on where to start or what to look out for?

Any advice as to what town/motel to stay in?

I'm going in blind and have no idea where to even start.

Thanks

One thing I noticed in KS, they do a good job marking their walk-in hunting areas.  Grab a map, check it against a topo map and Google Earth and use that info to start your hunting.  Spend some time cruising the areas and good luck there!
Love to hunt the King of Spring!

I'm in Tennessee so I'll be headed  west.
Not certain what part of the state I want to go to.
I have been lucky enough here in Tn and Ms with a few Easterns so a Rio does sound intriguing.

Thanks guys for the help
Sasquatch I'm sending you a PM

If you want a rio you need to be in the western part of the state. Lots of mutts until you get west of roughly The I-135 corridor

you have to be careful , there is a large population of Eastern/hybrid birds almost right smack in the middle of the state..... I hunt south central and you never know what you will see in that part.....

Thanks

I'm really out for a turkey, A Rio would be nice but a mutt/hybrid wouldn't hurt my feelings ????

I went out to Kansas the first time with intentions of hinting public land. I never stepped foot on public land once I got out there. I found it very easy to get permission on private ground.... Go to the courthouse of the county you intend to hunt, buy a pva book and start scouting.... Five birds and ask permission..... FYI open country Kansas birds are nothing like your Tennessee birds.... I have watched birds walk 3 miles in Kansas. And right back to the same spot to roost..... Do allot of long distance scouting...... You will have fun

We have a lot of birds here in NE Kansas. There is a lot of public ground that is around 4 lakes that are all within 45 minutes of each other. I live right by Clinton Lake here in Douglas County. There is Perry Lake to the north 20 min, Hilsdale Lake to the east 40 min, and Pomona lake to the southwest 30 min. I dont think you would have a problem locating birds at any of them.

Great????
Thanks for the info

You would be about 5 years too late to the party for that area. Population is waaaay down and pressure is waaaay up. I hunt private near one of these areas and due to the increased pressure and problems associated with it, the private landowners are far less likely to give permission. I know this from speaking to my landowner---If we had not developed a relationship over the past 8 years he wouldn't even let me hunt it.
The lake areas are more susceptible to spring flooding and the past years have been a disaster. There has been more pressure every year=bad combination.
After the first few days of pressure the birds move onto private, making my place even better.
My advice would be to look for permission on private away from these heavily pressured areas. The WIHA propetries were awesome 10 years ago, but the secret is out on them as well---Might just have something to do with Internet scouting.
