Anybody carved a gun stock before?

I got a notion to try it with my dremel on an older gun. I've gotten this far and when I put a coat of natural minwax on it I lose some of the details from the highlights. I need advice for how to finish it. I was planning to use spar urethane as a waterproofing protectant. Basically, I don't know what I'm doing.

I think it looks pretty good overall, I like it.

Maybe just go back and deepen up the areas where you lost detail and re-stain. I think the second pic looks good the way the stain took to the deeper lines.

I have a cousin who has done some that are absolutely amazing,he carves deeper into the stock around the main subject leaving basically a 3-D image of the wildlife. But he is an artistic hand wood carver like I've never seen. Ill see if I can get a pic of one of his.
Seeing yours makes me want to do some whittling on my ole 870. I enjoy tinkering with such as that.

nice it turned out really well, mine wasn't so nice but I'm a poor artist.

I wonder if using a small dremel tool would work well for the design?

Hey John, when you get a chance get over to American Longrifles and the Contemporary Longrifle Association websites. The folks over there will help you get squared away. Google Jim Kibler to look at some of his carvings on rifles. They basically stab in the design with a small blade/gouge or chase with a v gouge and then remove the background and then clean everything up. It's relief carving.No doubt you have artistic talent. Go for it !

It was really fun. I drew up (added details onto a picture I found) my next one to do a beat up double barrel I inherited. It's really fun to do. Anybody could do it if they had a rotary tool and some time.
