I think it's a bit silly to have the government involved in taking sides over the name of a sports team, but your example completely misses the point. Redskins is seen as a slur, those other words are not. Someone of Italian descent probably wouldn't have any problem with a team named the Sicilians, but call a team the WOP's or Dago's and I don't think it would go over so well.
