Kansas advice for an out of stater
April 07, 2015, 02:25:52 PM
I've researched several outfitters that have been recommended to me but want to gather more advice for hunting Kansas as an out of stater. I've had several folks tell me the better (and far less expensive) route is to hunt the walk in areas or door knock and gain permission on private land.
Anyone have any experiences hunting the walk in areas they can share?
How easy is it to gain permission on private land?
What units/counties should I focus more effort in to learning about? I am leaning unit 2 & 3.
Thanks,
Nathan

SE Kansas is going to laugh at you trying to knock on doors. We have been inundated for years. Best luck is northern Kansas. WIHA can be good. Brother moved to NC Kansas and didn't know anybody. Hunted WIHA one afternoon and 4 longbeards came right in. On the other hand there is spring turkey WIHA here that is short pasture grass and the nearest trees are 3/4 of a mile away. A turkey may have crossed this place once or twice but they sure as heck aint using it.

Nope...
Never tried to gain access to private land in KS without paying at least a trespass fee...
I would get the WIHA booklet, and start picking places as far away from any towns as possible...
I've killed lots of KS public land birds, 100% by using tire rubber & boot leather...

I'm about to head out there in a month to hit the WIHA. I agree with mudhen on tire rubber and boot leather.

The Dept. let Wildlife and Parks in KS does not to my knowledge make any attempt to insure the walk in hunting areas are any kind of decent hunting ground....could be bare ground , no cover.Landowners just sign up ground and get some remuneration from State for it.
