What do you guys fill is the best choke/ammunition combo for this gun.  My son is 9 and going on his first turkey hunt this spring.  I am currently using a SSX choke and magnum blend and at 32 yards I am getting any where from 140 to 147 in a 10" circle.  Can I do better then this or is this about the normal.

Your gun/choke/ammo combination is really, really good. If it were me I'd stick with your present combination.

Getting 150s in my mossberg 20 with a carlsons and hw 7's. But what you have seems to be working good

Thanks for the replies.  I was wondering about picking up a box of the Federal HW #7s to see if I could get any better numbers

remmy1187

Those are good numbers but I would be concerned about the recoil being too much for your son.  Has he shot it yet?   The last thing we want to do at such a young age is to make them scared to shoot.

ILHUNTER

I was also concerned about the recoil on my son.  He has shot it with standard 2-3/4" #6 and #7 shells.  He said it didn't kick to bad with these loads.  I shot it with the 3" magnum blend and could tell it kicked more but still not that bad.  He will only be shooting these loads to kill a turkey and he should be pumped up enough that he wont even be able to tell it.  Does the Federal HW #7 have less of a kick to them?

Yep your definately doing the right thing having him practice with low base target loads. Your right he wont feel a thing when he shoots that longbeard strutting 25 yards away. No the Federal Hw's wont kick any less in 3" but they do make a 2&3/4" HW 20 ga load that kicks alot less than 3"mags. Your setup is just fine and is on par with what others get with that shell. When you do run out of magblends though get some 3" HW#7s .You wont look back to magblends they wont hold a candle to the HW's in 20 ga.

ILHUNTER

I told him the same thing about shooting at a turkey, he won't feel a thing.  I have heard a lot of good things about the Fed Hw #7's and that will prob. be what I use next year if this year gets him addicted to it.  Now I just got to do my job of getting the turkey into range.
