I don't have any denatured alcohol on hand, and I live about 30 min from town. I do have some acetone, and regular rubbing alcohol on hand. Will either of these work in the place of denatured alcohol? I'm trying to get some better patterns, and tho I wiped till the patch came out clean, there may have still been some residue from the solvent. Thanks

Oh I also have some brake parts cleaner if that will work?

Tom Foolery

I've used Acetone and carb cleaner, both have worked well.

:morning: what about grain alcohol or shine?
I think something that evaporates and de-greases would be good, ?

Sumtoy would know

Ok, now I have a question, and I apologize, and don't mean to hijack this thread.
Does running denatured alcohol through your barrel after using standard cleaners help with patterns?

Tom Foolery

Any oil or film left over from standard cleaners should be removed by the alcohol and it should help patterns settle down on a "clean" barrel.  The cleaners don't usually evaporate quickly and some leave a coating to protect bores/metal.

I shot my 20 gauge after cleaning yesterday but did not run anything to remove the cleaner and I had one of the crappiest patterns ever with the POI being off as well.  I recleaned and then ran carb cleaner through the barrel, let it sit for a minute or two and fired again.  A good pattern that was centered up was the result.  I've done the same thing with my 12 gauges also.

A friend brought his new 835 to pattern yesterday and he had polished and then cleaned with Hoppes and then cleaned to a white patch.  I ran some carb cleaner down it and it pulled 3 more dirty patches out, I assume oil and stuff from the Hoppes.

Rubbing alcohol or brake cleaner will work. I have used both and it does a good job. Just be careful as it may damage the finish if you get enough on it. I pretty much use the rubbing alcohol all the time now  when patterning, swabbing  between shots with a patch wrapped around a brush soaked with alcohol on it.

I use 70% and 90% rubbing  alcohol all the time and works great

Thanks guys. I'm fixing to snatch the barrel off of my 1100, run a brush with Hopps #9 then swab it out with rubbing alcohol to see if my patterns get any better.

Would standard 70% rubbing alcohol work?

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.
