Mossberg 835 Standard Sights or Scope

I got an 835 (Ultimag 24" barrel and Primos Jelli Head choke) this summer and the factory sights just seem odd to me. They move around quite a bit without doing anything and I worry about alignment. That being said I am also wondering about a scope. I like the Weaver KASPA Turkey Scope but I think it might be too much for me here in Oregon. I also worry about the punishment that gun could to bring to a scope between the pump and the magnum loads. A reflex/red dot like the Fast Fire 3 are very intriguing as may be more what I am looking for. I have never missed a turkey on my 500 with standard double bead sight. I have taken over 35 gobblers with it I upgraded to the 835 and I would like to continue the streak but as I said before the standard sights worry me because of all the adjustments.

How did you like them on a pump?

Did they hold up after use?

Did they fog up?

I've used several cheap red dots that last one or two seasons and either break or quit all together.
Last year I bought a tru glo gobble stopper and put on my 835
I really like it.
I don't like the factory sights on my gun
Never have been true.

My eyes have started over the hill and I have been through some of these issues w my 835.  Went through a few sets of magnum gobble dots through the years and liked them. Bought a ring of fire sight/ now beard buster years ago and liked it alot.  Went to a shotgun scope about 3 years ago 1.5-4.5x circle reticle.   Loved how it performed but did get tagged hard when contorted in a cedar thicket trying to get on the gobbler.  And yes you can fog em up, especially in wet spring weather.     And you start getting into weight the more you throw on it.  I'll probably use the beard buster sight this year.  It helps us older eyes focus on the target by centering on the target and don't add any weight.   You may be able to pick up a used Eotech cheap after their announced settlement,  just a thought.    35 kills w your 500 tells me you will adjust just fine!

Check out the Bushnell Trophy Red dot 730131.  I have an 835 that shoots only 3 1/2" shells, has been on airplanes and in trucks to South Dakota, Kansas, Wisconsin, Florida and NC for the past 10 years with no issues.  I have the black 30 mm tube but they come in Realtree APG now.  Great scope, durable, plenty of eye relief and won't break the bank.  Once you sight them in, where you put the dot is where the shot goes.  I shot a bird last year with the gun turned 90 degrees from vertical to get around some brush and the bird never moved when the gun went off.  Good Luck with your selection.

Thank you for the replies that really helps. I do really worry about the fogging up here in Oregon. We can go from rain to sun multiple times a day. How is the target acquisition on the 1.5 x 4.5 scopes? I can specifically remember a hunt 2 seasons ago that the birds came in on my left and starting getting nervous at about 10 yards. I had to drop my trigger stick turn and fire in one sweeping motion or they would be over the hill. Also how do the stock sights come off the 835? It is dipped Mossy Oak Obsession and I would hate to ruin the paint job.

Over 20 years and more than 125 birds down and never failed me, plus when in close and in the "Circle of Death" bird is done for. Have made many moving shots too. Critical with a tight choke and up close to be right on and batteries don't go dead on crosshairs.

So I am looking at the FF III or the Bushnell first strike. What mount do I need and will be able to get put onto an 835 with a short mount like this? http://swfa.com/Burris-FastFire-Mount-P12617.aspx

Does the 835 need drilled and tapped or is that done already?

Also how do the stock sights come off the 835? It is dipped Mossy Oak Obsession and I would hate to ruin the paint job.

They are pressed on if my memory serves me and they are not well constructed. A small screw driver should pop them off, but if your going will a scope there is no reason to mess with them. I'd recommend replacing them with the Truglo pro series or Williams iron sights, unless your eyes have trouble seeing them.

I've used the Truglo's on several guns with no problems at all.

on my 835. I want it to be low profile and clean and I feel like this is the best way if these will all work together. I don't want to drop the money if they wont and then be stuck and disappointed.
