Merriam's turkey range circa 1925 and 1942

Given the recent discussion of the Merriam's turkey on here, I though some might be interested in seeing a map of the Merriam's range at greatest contraction (around 1925, dashed lines) and with some of the early restoration successes (up to 1942, lines with double dots in them).  The map comes from J. Stokely Ligon's "History and Management of Merriam's Wild Turkey", published by the New Mexico Game and Fish Commission under the Pittman-Robertson Act in 1946.



The maximum hereditary range extended to the vicinity of Montrose and Denver to the north, and Prescott and Flagstaff to the west.

very interesting thanks for sharing that map.  As you can see they show the Merriams in the Catalina's and the Chiricahua's in southern Arizona.  This has always concerned me when the Game and Fish put Gould's in these two area's and now have hunt's in both area's how do you know if you are actually shooting a Gould's?

After looking for a while I finally found one for a decent price on Abe Books.  Mine is ex libris from the VA Hospital Library, Fort Bayard, New Mexico.  A lot of history there too.
