Safest hunters out there are women who are new to the sport... Still a a bit fearful and cautious.
Sometimes as we get older and have a few years under us, I think we get a bit cocky and forget a bit about gun safety... I had a gun discharge while duck hunting in the tules. Tule got wrapped around the trigger guard, and I guess from the pressure of pulling it out to shoot, the safety and trigger got compressed... Scared the crap out of me, and I was just thankful that the muzzle had been pointed in a safe direction...
My buddy had a deer rifle go off simply by pushing the bolt forward to load the gun... Had the gun wedged in his crotch at the time, so it was a highly unpleasant experience for him... But, other than not being able to properly take care of his wife for a few days, nothing bad happened cause the gun was pointed in a safe direction.
As long as the end of the gun is pointed in a safe direction, the chance of having something bad happen is pretty slim... It is all about muzzle direction and control...
