I posted this on the mouth call making page but I thought someone might see it faster on the general forum

I'd like to hear your advice on latex thickness and layering 2 and 3 reed calls.

so let's say I am making a 3 reed call...are you using the same thickness for each reed or are you using a specific thickness for the top reed like .004 and using .003 or another thickness for the second and third reeds. I know I need to experiment with what will work best for me but some help would be nice before I waist a bunch of material. I am very green when it comes to call making.

GobbleNut

Combinations of .003 and proph (.0025) seem to consistently work best for me and for those I make calls for.  The thicker latex never seems to produce the same sound quality, although I am sure there are callers out there that prefer .004 and thicker.  For the "average caller", however, I think using .003 and proph combinations is the way to start off.  You should plan on experimenting with the thicker latex though,...just to see how it works for you.

I like .003 layering for both two and three-reed calls with reed backsets of 1/8" +-.  .003 over proph can be just as good.  Reed cuts are equally or more important, as well.  Keep your cuts to the longest (sound) reed initially.  Also, I suggest moving your reed cuts to different locations along the reed when cutting your calls to find your "sweet spot".

Bottomland

I agree with gobblenut.  .003 for top reed and 2 proph bottom reeds works best for me.  Ive used .004 on top and 2 reeds of proph too, just a different pitch of sounds.  Also like he says the size and location of cut you put in the top reed will change the pitch and raspyness of a call along with different latex tensions.  Its a huge learning experience and i think it will make you a better caller with the sounds you produce.  Best way is to start there and run through a bunch of material till you found the perfect call for you.

I personally like a .oo4 for a top reed set over proph, .003 black or .003 white.  Yes the lighter you build it the less air.  The best thing is to experiment until you find your personal best reed stack.  I will strongly recommend to use the same weight or heavier as a top reed.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.
