Hey guys would just like some opinion and or answers. Any and all input is appreciated. I have a mossberg 835 24" bbl, and factory unported ulti-full .695 choke. I am putting 185-190 in the 10 using winchester longbeard 3.5" 6's. To me that's a great pattern and my 20 yard pattern is tight but I shoot a red dot on my setup so it's not too tight for me. I'm happy with what I have, however I'm know I could improve my numbers by switching chokes to a truglo ssx .670, I know my 10" 40 yard numbers would most certainly go up but by how much and would it be worth sacrificing the larger 20 yard pattern the stock tube gives me? Does anyone use the 835 w/ssx if so what's your 20 yard pattern look like Nd what kind of 10" 40 yard numbers are you getting? I guess the question is stick with factory ulti-full and good 20 yard pattern and 185-190 in the 10" at 40 or go with ssx? And by the way $ is very important with me as I know the best combos are prolly Ic or pg with hevi but I can't afford 100$ choke tubes and 7$ shells:(

Looks like you are on par.  I trust the guy that did the shooting of these patterns.  IMO, shoot the 5s, better hunting pattern and the 5s will carry more at 40 yards than 6s.  Good luck!

If all your interested in is killing birds at reasonable ranges, stick with what ya got. If you feel like chasing numbers try a tighter tube, but keep in mind results will vary. 180's with lead 6's is dumping plenty enough energy on them. The patterns in the links that davisd9 posted are great and if I had to hunt with one, I'd shoot the 6's in the 260's over the 5's in the 180's. With that factory choke the Federal Heavy 7's with the FCW would probably give you the best of both worlds, but a higher cost per round.

Not to hijack the thread but this was an informative post...I've been shooting my 24" barrel 835 with the fabled Star Dot ...it was excellent with Mag Blends but I didn't get as good results with Longbeard 6's (memory serves me maybe high 190's- low 200's).

I think I will give an SSX a try with Longbeards this year.

I agree with this. You have what sounds like a great hunting pattern. I didn't get much more as far as numbers go with the 6's to shoot them over the 5's. I will hunt with either # 5 or 6's in my gun. Witch is a 20" 835 with a PG.670. Shooting 3.5"  5 longbeards highest I got was 183 at 40 yards and 211 with 3.5" 6's. I'm not a number chaser but I like to know what the gun shell combo is doing. I just want a good even pattern. But  with the .695 that the gun came with shot 145-150 with the pre flight control wad 3.5" -2.25- 4's. I wanna try the longbeards in 4's.

Do what you really want, but there's nothing wrong with what you have right there.
Good hunting!

Honestly. If you're pushing near 200 with the factory choke I would leave
it alone. I have the SSX and the IC in my Mossys. They produce a super tight pattern at 40. One pushes 3.5" #5 long beards.  And the other runs 3" #6 long beards.

The only bad thing about groups like these is you better not flinch at close range. After I shot these I shot a few more with the barrel kinda dirty, 10 or so shots with out brushing, and the pattern spread out and made a better hunting pattern. I plan to use the same set up this season, but hunt with a slightly dirty barrel.

Thanks for input guys I think I'm gonna try an ssx anway and just see what the results are as I highly doubt my numbers wouldn't improve I would like to hunt with 5's and I think the ssx will give me 170 to 180 in the ten at 40 with 5 longbeards I hope anyway I don't want to get carried away with numbers as I realize it only takes a few in the head and he's dead lol I just want to have the best shooting combo at all ranges 5 to 40 that I can I have a good even killing pattern I'm just gonna see what the ssx has to offer!!! Thanks guys I'll let you know what kind of numbers I get with the ssx and lb 5 and 6 shot :thanks:

I think you'll be pleased with the results you see.
